"It helps to remember the old adage about doctors - only fifty percent of them graduated in the top fifty percent of their class." --an old adage

Sounds nice but of course it means nothing. "Only fifty percent of NBA players are the 50% best pro basketball players." So does that mean that those in the bottom half are bad at basketball? Even the player with the worst stats in the league is better at basketball than 99.9% of the human population.

So, western medicine is a good thing, is what I'm saying here.

  1. All professional basketball players are pretty good at basketball, sure. And doctors are usually better than the average person at being doctors. That doesn't mean they're all awesome at doing what you actually want them to do, which is not take your blood pressure, prescribe medicine, etc., but figure out what the problem is so you don't have to keep going back and giving them more money.

  2. i know, i was just taking issue with the logic of the quote

  3. by the way, all my experiences with doctors have been good. i've never been prescribed anything unnecessarily. like when we talk about computers, all i'm talking about is my personal experience.

  4. "Old adages" usually aren't known for their watertight logic.

My experience with doctors was always good, until it wasn't. Shit happens, etc.
