Why does literary theory want so fucking badly to be social studies or philosophy or psychology or something else that it isn't?

  1. Because literary theorists get bored beating the same path down. It's such a limited field, and its scholars crib from (rely on) other fields to continue to publish articles on/get hired to teach literary theory.

I think most literary theory is dull. As is most creative writing written by literary theorists.

The weird thing is, and this is a big, fat stereotype, literary theorists are the snobbiest out of social-studiers, philosophers, and psychologists.
